Bookshops in al-Hijaz

13 Jan

Many people pick up books on their visits to al-Hijaz for Hajj and ‘Umrah. However, some do not know where to go. The following bookshops are my own personal favourites. Feel free to enquire of add more.

Abu Dhar al-Ghifari Street just north of the Masjid has a few nice bookshops, such as al-Maghamisi and Dar al-Zaman. These are found opposite Jami’at al-Birr. There are other branches of these two stores. Dar al-Badawi near the Islamic University has a great collection from Dar al-Gharb al-Islami and Dar al-Minhaj.

Maktabat al-Asadi in al-Aziziyah just before Umm al-Qura University.

Dar al-Minhaj on Abha Street in Kandara is well worth the visit. Kunuz al-Ma’rifah on Sitteen Street (officially known as King Fahd Street) in al-Sharafiyah. Yahya Masum Street in al-Jami’ah has a dozen bookshops, several of which are very good. My favourite being al-Shanqiti.

Do you know who the agents for Dar al-Fath Jordan and Dar al-Diyar Kuwait are?
Books from these publishers are generally unavailable in Egypt except during the book fair because they are rather expensive for the local Egyptian market (I was speaking to their old agent in Cairo yesterday) so it works be good to be able to source these books from Saudi if required.

I don’t know their agents in al-Hijaz. However, they could be in Riyadh. it is well-known that Riyadh is the best place to pick up books as every major publishing house has a presence there. No other Saudi city or region comes close to Riyadh in this regard.

Hazrat Umar (Radiyallahu Anhu) said when he was on the pulpit : You people must be humble towards one another, for I heard Allah’s Messenger (Sallallahu Alaihi Wa Sallam) says,” He who is humble for Allah’s sake will be exalted (praised) by Allah, for though he considers himself lowly he is great in the eyes of men; but he who is proud will be abased (humilated) by Allah, for though he considers himself great he is lowly in the eyes of men to such an extent that he is of less value in their estimation than a dog or a pig.”
